I HOPE MY OBSERVATIONS will help you, and help you help others. These are very similar, but each has its own nuance.
* It's OK to not be absolutely perfect, since no one is, except God.
* It's OK to have physical weaknesses, it is a human thing.
Even Jesus (the Man) did.
* Don't beat yourself up (or anyone else) over mundane shortcomings.
Do your best, but don't get stressed.
* When you fail at something, don't "lose it," but learn from it.
Take construction, shake destruction.
* In non-essentials, less than OK is OK.
Don't settle for less. Do your best.
If you're not perfect, you're like all the rest.
* It's OK to NOT BE "world class" athlete or world class anything (in the mundane world).
As they say, make the main thing, the main thing.
* It is OK to fail at some things (non-essentials), some times.
We all do.
Just don't settle for failure.
* If you can't laugh at yourself, you're going to be disappointed, discouraged and disgruntled.
* If you can't take encouragement, instruction and teasing, you need to make some changes.
* Learn to face, admit and rise above your failures with grace and perseverance.

Things to prepare for:
games, concerts, tests, interviews,
Political and Financial Collapse,
LIFE, DEATH and FACING GOD.
Sadly, I think that the last on this list is also the last on most people's priority list.
We cannot avoid or forestall or change every negative event we face. It is good to work for the best, but we must prepare ourselves for those times and events which are not positive or to our liking.
Christians throughout history AND TODAY, all over the world have had to deal with the worst circumstances in life. THIS IS NOT HEAVEN, and we don't have heaven on earth. The Bible makes it clear that we will not see The Kingdom until the King (Jesus) comes back.
Do what you can (within the parameters that God allows) to make a better life, better world, BUT be aware and be ready to deal with hard trial, material losses, financial setbacks, political overthrow, persecution, sickness, death.
Live life in the presence and the power and purity of God.
Take the bad with grace, be strong in the Lord.
Live with heaven in view.
Live in submission to Christ.
Walk in faith, walk in love, walk in victory.
Bad times will come, because this is the war, not the victory celebration. We will enter into eternal victory, we will celebrate the King of kings, we will reign with Him forever and ever. In the meantime, we must be vigilant, faithful and we must occupy until He comes.

Check out these verses, referring to the two distinct areas of the Christian life:
HANDS (life, actions)
and
HEART (state of being).
Hands represent what we do.
Heart represents what we are.
God requires clean hands and a pure heart. They are not one and the same. Both are possible because of the atoning work of Christ. It begins with regeneration and a redeemed life. The saved person has received a new, godly nature (mind of Christ) and begins to live a life of righteousness but he still has the carnal mind, which battles with his new nature. God calls all sinners to have their lives changed and their sins washed away. However, the believer is left with his old nature (the mind that is prone to the flesh), which is in contradistinction to his new nature (the spiritual mind). However, God provides deliverance from the old nature, the sin nature, the carnal mind, the mind of the flesh, the double mind. Once the believer is cleansed, delivered, purified from his carnal mind, his double-mindedness, then he is pure, even as Christ is pure.
Look at these verses.

4 He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.

7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
DOUBLE MINDED

James 4:7-8
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Does your pastor preach that God commands, enables and requires holiness of heart and life?
If not, come to our church, because we do.
A friend asked a good question.
Got 2 questions, friend. Is is possible for a person to have a holy life, but not a holy heart? Can a person have a holy heart, but not a holy life? It would seem the answer to those questions would be “no,” but I would appreciate your take on it. I am trying to understand if holiness of “heart and life” are redundant terms. Thanks!
MY RESPONSE...
It is not redundant, but it is often confused and therefore people think that when Christians DO the right thing, then they must be holy. On the other hand there are people who have come to a point of total surrender and heart purity, but they move from being entirely sanctified to being sterilized and they are TOO HOLY to do the work that needs to be done. AND YES, I realize there is contradiction in these examples. However, I don't doubt that people actually are led astray.
I believe that the saved person, who has a new heart a new man and begins to do the works of God, begins to live and walk in a holy manner, but still has the old man, which is a spiritual corruption (as is addressed in Romans 7). This is referred to as having clean (holy) hands. The person who is saved has the power of God to walk in the Light and therefore to have a holy life. But the saved person who has not been purified by the infilling of the Holy Spirit, which delivers from all sin (inbred as well as active or behavioral) therefore needs to be purified in his inner man, by the purging out of the old man. This complete trust in Christ to save from all sin brings a believer to the point where he will love God with the whole heart, mind, soul and strength. This is a holy heart, cleansed from all sin.
To recap quickly...
There are believers who do the works of God, but struggle from time to time with the old man. Those believers do live a holy life.
There are believers who have finally surrendered all and trusted Christ for cleansing from all sin (the old man) setting them free from the law of sin and death and bringing them into the law of love, the law of liberty, the royal law, the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus (as in Romans 8). The heart is made perfect in love. Sadly, sometimes those people think that the experience of heart purity is the destination, when in reality it is not. It is essential to a holy heart, but walking in the light and growing in grace is essential to maintaining a holy heart and life. As John tells us, we must walk in the light in order to be cleansed from all sin and to be cleansed from all iniquity.
