08/17/20 IF THE WHOLE WORLD STINKS, IT MIGHT BE YOU

I was thinking about the stinky kid in camp that never washed his feet. I put some of this in his shoes and he disappeared the next day.

I know some of you are thinking this is in bad taste. Well, you should have sat next to him in the dining hall. hehehe. They called him ROSE. Actually he had bad breath too. When I confronted him about his halitosis, he proudly said that "bad breath is better than no breath at all." This was just a joke, but lack of hygiene is no joke.

Sadly, I have known guys like this. I realize some people practice good hygiene but still have a problem with odor (breath, body, feet). I also realize it is possible for people to be too critical.

When I was a young pastor and attending summer ministry classes at Candler School of Theology (Emory University) I remember resting on my bed one afternoon (after playing some sports activities). My older, stodgy, straight laced roommate thought I was asleep and came over to my bed with a can of air freshener, spraying my shoes and around my bed. hehehe. I laughed it off, because I figured he probably never sweated in his life and was offended just because I was there. (after all, he acted that way from the moment we met, and I had not even had a chance to sweat. HAHAHA). I have always been concerned with being clean and presentable.

I do remember a woman who came into a store and smelled up the whole place. A store worker grabbed a can of air freshener and followed her around, spraying the air freshener after the woman and exclaiming as she went, "whewww." Obviously that smelly lady had been in there before and the employees had a very definite response.

I remember another time that our family went to a restaurant. After we sat down another couple came in and sat a couple of tables away from us. IT WAS AWFUL. Their filthiness and smell made some of us gag. We had to get up and leave. WHOA, that was terrible.

There are other unpleasant stories.

Here is my point. There are people who are not careful about cleanliness. This is true for body, clothing and house. When people are careless about hygiene, they get use to the smell and continue to get worse. It is sad to say, but even in our modern society there are people who have to be reminded to clean up and make themselves presentable. I am not talking about fancy clothes or expensive wardrobe. I am talking about basic cleanliness.

Make sure you take all the steps to be presentable in public.
